GAY/LESBIAN/BI-SEXUAL/TRANSGENDER (GLBT) Awareness Week 2008 April 14 - 18 Calendar of Events ______________________________________________________________________________________ ALL EVENTS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED ______________________________________________________________________________________ Monday, April 14 Rev. White is the author of Stranger at the Gate: To Be Gay and Christian in America and is Justice Minister of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. Mel served the Christian church as a prize-winning television producer and filmmaker, a best-selling author, a pastor, seminary professor, and ghost writer to religious leaders including Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, and Jerry Falwell. After a time of terrible depression, Mel finally reconciled his Christian faith and his sexual orientation. In 1997, Mel and his partner, Gary Nixon, received the ACLU's National Civil Liberties Award in Atlanta, GA for their efforts at applying the "soul force" principles of Gandhi and King to the struggle for justice for sexual minorities. Tuesday, April 15 Wednesday, April 16 Thursday, April 17 Homo Acts are coming to SIUC. Visitors are invited to "come and see the homosexual agenda in action." The "action" involves games, tossing Frisbees, eating lunch, and other commonplace activities illustrating that gay people are just like everyone else. Thursday, April 17 A panel of local transgender individuals will be discussing transgender issues on campus and in the community. Saturday, April 18 A Kiss-In is coming to the Student Center around noon April 18. The awareness exercise features GLBT people showing public affection and assessing public reaction.
