For additional information contact Paulette Curkin pcurkin@siu.edu Wednesday, October 10 This is a joint GLBT/LHM program. This striking and illuminating documentary explores and exposes the secret subculture of New York lesbians living as "aggressives." Often mistaken for men, these women range from pretty tomboys to the blatantly butch, boldly creating their own identities outside of society's established sexual categories. Stripped of pretense, they lead us to fashion shoots and prison cells to reveal their work lives, love lives and social lives, including the underground "ball" scene where lesbians compete for lead "AG" status. A discussion will follow the film. (73 minutes) For additional information contact Sonia Garrett sonjka@siu.edu Thursday, October 11 Safe Zone is a program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale which identifies faculty and staff who can provide support and resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) students, faculty, and staff. Participation as a GLBTQ ally helps to create a campus that is inclusive and affirming. Participants are committed to social justice and understand the importance of campus diversity. Upon completion of the workshop, participants have the option of becoming a Safe Zone member. Both the workshop and membership are free. For additional information visit the website http://www.siu.edu/~glbtrc/safe_zone/index.htm and contact Paulette Curkin pcurkin@siu.edu Thursday, October 11 October 11 is National Coming out Day. SIUC students and allies will wear plain white shirts labeled with the words “I’m Out” or “Ally.” Community members are invited to show their support for their fellow students by using sharpies to write words of encouragement on the shirts. There will be an additional event later that night. Keep your eyes open for announcements. For additional information contact co-presenters Barry Vesciglio or Christy Hamilton at (618) 536-4441 ______________________________________________________________________________________ Wednesday, October 17 The Believers is an unprecedented feature documentary that shatters assumptions about faith, gender, and religion. Built around the world's first transgender gospel choir, the film portrays the choir's dilemma - how to reconcile their gender identity with the widespread belief that changing one's gender goes against the word of God. The intimate personal stories shed light on the complexity of balancing social change, family history, religion and identity. At the heart of their dilemma is a struggle for acceptance within two worlds historically at odds with one another. As one of the film's subjects eloquently says, "I'm living in a window. I get to see both sides." (80 min) For additional information contact Sonia Garrett sonjka@siu.edu Thursday, October 18 Dave Pallone worked 18 years as a professional umpire, 10 of those years with the National Baseball League. As the third youngest umpire in baseball history, he demonstrated courage, professionalism and the ability to withstand adversity through many of baseball's high profile controversial events. Dave is the author of the 1990 New York Time's best-selling autobiography, Behind the Mask: My Double Life in Baseball, which offers a revealing look at baseball through the eyes of a gay man. For additional information contact Brooke Morgan bmorgan@siu.edu Wednesday, October 24 I examine fashioning of lesbian linguistic agency that is taken up in autobiographical writing by imagining desire outside heteronormative frames, hence probing and further translating personal experience into the collective’s force for political action. I argue for the autobiographical postmodern re/turn that both recognizes and disavows sexual difference. Such practice of writing accounts for decentralized operations of power, as well as the infinite possibilities for agency and contradiction. In short, linguistic agency and linguistic survival are located within autobiographical writing. This textual move highlights a nuance to the constitutive nature of hetero-discursive frameworks that define lesbian bodies and subjectivities, but also mobilize strategically disruptive politics that undermine their hegemonic effects. For additional information contact Professor Naida Zukic zukicn@siu.edu Wednesday, October 24 While the majority of Americans believe that gays deserve the same rights as straight citizens, nearly half feel that, on some level, homosexuality is wrong. Exploring the roots of homophobia through a profile of a murder case, this PBS video questions how America’s attitudes, beliefs, and fears have contributed to the rise in violence against gays. (60 minutes) A discussion will follow the film. For additional information contact Sonia Garrett sonjka@siu.edu Friday, October 26 Join Community Floss, a local improv comedy group, and other SIUC students for an evening that is high-energy and all laughs. Help us celebrate GLBT History Month with a smile! ______________________________________________________________________________________ Monday, October 29 What happens when Super Queer, a humanitarian working to educate people on the effects of HFV (Heteronormative Fascist Virus), attempts to psychically channel the political leadership of this country to hold an open discussion on equality right here at SIUC? This is definitely SERIOUS.
